Multi-colored Roses from the Netherlands

Date December 3, 2008

I found this on flickr: Multi-colored roses http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewdarnjenny/1389033263/

On display at the LA County Fair…yep, they are REAL and alive! They were created in the Netherlands and are dyed using hypodermic needles inserted in the stems as they grow. Crazy!!

I sent these roses to my daughter for her 12th birhtday. They were out of this world when they arrived. She was so happy to get roses that were so different. They are so beautiful and such an aroma.

They run about $180 per dozen, including FedEx overnight shipping in the USA. No, they will not come out this way if you plant them in your garden. As they are growing, a hypodermic needle is used to inject dye. This individual attention to each flower is why they cost so much. My wife will be thrilled when she gets these tomorrow.

A multivalued bouquet of roses indicates a combination of love, respect, unity, friendship and devotion. In other words, it is not a purely romantic gesture.

What kind of dye is used? Os it something we can attempt in our own gardens? They are beautiful!

Roses that were sent in multicolored bundles also held meaning. A bouquet of yellow roses mixed with white rosebuds mixed the yellow of friendship, with the symbol of girlhood. By sending a bouquet such as this, the sender was telling the receiver that she was just a good friend, and also too young for serious love.

In the world of flowers, roses have a language of their own. And while many people know that a red rose means desire, a white rose means fidelity and a yellow rose means friendship, not many people know that in giving someone multiple roses, you are actually ending a layered message. Giving a bouquet of multicolored roses is often the solution when you don’t know what to say, or you want to say it all.

I am seriously into the unusual when it comes to flowers, but I really don’t like these. I do however love the idea of a bouquet or arrangement of roses of many colors. How does the rose start out? What color is it naturally?

A few days ago I received a couple of silk stems that looked exactly like this, and rejected them because they were too fantastic, I like my silk flowers to look real. Looks like I got it wrong!

Thanks for such an interesting and informative web site.

Wonder if it would be a good wedding bouquet. Probably not, but excellent for decoration around the house.
