Wintering roses in Spokane.

Roses are not deciduous, they only go into a phase of winter quiescence. Quick drops in winter temperature cause liquid in the canes and trunk to expand when freezing. This expansion bursts cells damaging or killing your plant. Hardy varieties and own root roses are less susceptible to freeze damage.

  1. Choose winter hardy roses for your climatic zone.
  2. For roses that may be marginal in your zone, and for all grafted roses winterize:
    • Fold two sheets of newspaper in half lengthwise. Staple together to form a large enough circle to surround your rose.
    • Fill the paper circle with pine needles, compost, or soil.
    • Springtime: remove paper circle and filling material.
